As America continues to commemorate its 250th anniversary, it's the perfect time to reflect not only on where we've been, but where we're going. A new exhibition at the Delaware History Museum invites visitors to do exactly that. Objects, Ideals & Delaware's Unfinished Revolution explores the promises made in the Declaration of Independence while asking an important question:
How well have we lived up to those ideals over the last 250 years?

Come explore the many stories of the First State at the Delaware History Museum, which also includes the Jane and Littleton Mitchell Center for African American Heritage. The Delaware History Museum…
Blending history, art and the voices of Delaware's next generation, this thought-provoking exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the First State's past, present and future.
Rather than simply looking back, Objects, Ideals & Delaware's Unfinished Revolution encourages visitors to think critically about Delaware's evolving story. Using artifacts and archival materials from the Delaware Historical Society's collections, the exhibition explores themes that have shaped life in Delaware, including: migration, agriculture, maritime history, civil resistance, community and identity.
Each object serves as a starting point for conversations about freedom, equality and opportunity, inviting visitors to consider how these ideals continue to shape our communities today.
One of the exhibition's most compelling features is the partnership between the Delaware Historical Society and students from Alexis I. duPont High School. Under the guidance of visual arts teacher Greg Thompson, students selected themes that resonated with their own experiences as Delawareans and created original artwork inspired by objects from the museum's collection. Each piece is accompanied by an artist statement, giving visitors insight into how today's young people interpret Delaware's history, and the future they hope to help build.
Their work adds a powerful contemporary voice to the exhibition, reminding visitors that history isn't just something we inherit, it's something we continue to create.

As Delaware continues to celebrate the nation's (and state's!) 250th anniversary, communities across the state are reflecting on the people, events and ideas that shaped America. This exhibition offers a unique contribution to those celebrations by focusing on Delaware's own journey over the past two and a half centuries. Rather than presenting history as a finished story, the exhibition encourages visitors to see it as an ongoing conversation, one that each generation has the opportunity to shape.
