In 2026, Delaware State Parks marks a major milestone, 75 years of protecting Delaware’s natural landscapes, historic sites, and outdoor experiences. What began in 1951 with just three parks has grown into a nationally respected system spanning 17 state parks, historic sites, nature preserves, beaches, campgrounds, marinas, and more than 170 miles of trails across the First State.

This anniversary year invites visitors and residents alike to explore Delaware’s outdoors, reflect on the parks’ legacy, and celebrate the spaces that connect generations through recreation, conservation, and history.

Delaware State Parks were established to preserve the state’s most significant natural and cultural resources while ensuring public access for recreation and education. Over the past 75 years, the system has expanded to protect more than 27,000 acres of land, from coastal dunes and freshwater wetlands to historic forts and former industrial sites reclaimed for public use. Today, the parks play a vital role in Delaware’s identity, serving as outdoor classrooms, gathering places, and gateways to the state’s rich environmental and historical story.

What Makes Delaware State Parks Special?

Delaware State Parks offers something for every type of visitor. Across the system, guests can enjoy:

  • Scenic hiking, biking, and equestrian trails
  • Kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, and fishing
  • Beach access and coastal exploration
  • Historic landmarks and living-history sites
  • Family-friendly programs and nature education

Equally important is the park system’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion, with features such as beach and trail wheelchairs, accessible fishing areas, paved trails, and inclusive programming designed to ensure everyone can enjoy the outdoors.
