The holiday season has arrived along the Brandywine, and there’s no better place to experience Delaware’s rich history wrapped in festive charm than Holidays at Hagley. Beginning Friday, November 28, through Thursday, January 1, Hagley Museum and Library transform into a sparkling holiday wonderland celebrating this year’s theme, “Our Storied Past”, a tribute to the traditions and tales passed down through generations of the du Pont family and beyond. 

Each room in Eleutherian Mills, the first du Pont family home built in America, is decked with timeless holiday décor that brings history to life. Explore themed displays inspired by family memories and the spirit of giving that has defined holidays at Hagley for decades. From the twinkle of candlelight to the scent of fresh greenery, this is one of Delaware’s most cherished holiday experiences. 

Holidays at Hagley offers something for everyone. From family-friendly events, hands-on fun, and a little nostalgia for those who love a classic Christmas it’s a can’t miss when visiting Wilmington & Brandywine Valley for the holiday season. 

A Sweet Tradition: The Annual Gingerbread House Contest 

Gingerbread at HagleyReady, set, bake! Hagley’s beloved Gingerbread House Contest invites bakers of all ages to show off their creativity. Categories include Adult/Family, Youth, and Community Partner, and entries will be displayed throughout the season inside Hagley’s winter wonderland. 

Registration is open now through Friday, November 21—so grab your rolling pins and let your imagination rise. Each year’s display delights visitors with whimsical designs ranging from storybook cottages to du Pont-inspired mills (and everything in between). Plus, prizes, including gift cards and a Hagley Membership, are up for grabs! 

Santa Day at Hagley 

Santa at HagleySaturday, December 6 | 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. 

Good news: Santa Claus is making a stop at Hagley! Families are invited to bring their wish lists, smiles, and holiday spirit for photos with Santa and festive fun throughout the grounds. Don your favorite holiday sweater (ugly or otherwise) and capture a keepsake moment surrounded by the beauty of Hagley’s decorated estate. 

Santa Day is included with regular museum admission and free for Hagley Members and children five and under. 

Holiday Nights at Hagley 

Holidays at Hagley - HouseTuesdays & Thursdays: December 9, 11, 16 & 18 | 4–7 p.m. 

See Hagley in a whole new light, literally! During Holiday Nights, Eleutherian Mills glows with warm candlelight as visitors enjoy exclusive evening tours of the historic du Pont family home. Wander through elegantly lit rooms, admire festive décor by night, and stop by the Museum Store for a warm drink or a little holiday shopping. 

It’s an intimate, after-hours experience perfect for couples, history buffs, or anyone seeking a peaceful evening escape amid the rush of the season.
