Coppélia 

The Charming Tale of Love, Mischief and a Mysterious Toy Maker  

Coppélia is a classical ballet that premiered in 1870 at the Théâtre Impérial de l'Opéra in Paris, France. It was choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon, with music composed by Léo Delibes. The ballet is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann called "Der Sandmann" (The Sandman), which is the same source that inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker." Coppélia is known for its charming characters, lively dance sequences, and delightful music, including the famous "Dance of the Hours." It's a ballet that combines elements of comedy, romance, and fantasy, making it a popular and enduring work in the classical ballet repertoire. Join the vivacious Swanhilda and her friends as they set out to uncover the identity of the mysterious Coppélia, whose appearance at the workshop of the eccentric Dr. Coppelius sets off a chain of comical misadventures.  

This charming classic is filled with laughs and delightful music and dancing. It is, perfect for all ages.

THE NUTCRACKER 

Delaware’s Holiday Tradition at The Grand  

"The Nutcracker" is one of the most famous and beloved ballets in the world. It was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and had its premiere in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” "The Nutcracker" is known for its beautiful and intricate choreography, as well as Tchaikovsky's enchanting music. The ballet features iconic dances such as the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Waltz of the Flowers, and the Dance of the Snowflakes. Each act of the ballet is filled with vibrant costumes, imaginative sets, and a sense of holiday magic. 

Join FSBT on the magical journey through the Land of Sweets in this sparkling production on the main stage of the Grand.

Triple bills are a popular format for ballet companies to showcase a diverse range of choreographic styles and repertoires in one evening. Triple bills can be exciting for both seasoned ballet enthusiasts and newcomers to the art form, as they provide a taste of various aspects of ballet's rich and varied repertoire.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY 

The Enchanting Fairy Tale Set to Tchaikovsky’s Glorious Score 

Sleeping Beauty is considered one of the great masterpieces of classical ballet and remains a staple in many ballet companies worldwide. It is based on Charles Perrault's fairy tale "La Belle au bois dormant" (The Sleeping Beauty), which tells the story of a princess named Aurora who is cursed by an evil fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and fall into a deep sleep, only to be awakened by true love's kiss. The Sleeping Beauty is a classical ballet that was first choreographed by Marius Petipa, with music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and now being performed by First State Ballet Theatre for all to enjoy.
