Sometimes, the most unexpected encounters lead to the most meaningful connections.
This fall, the Resident Ensemble Players (REP) at the University of Delaware invite audiences to experience Fireflies, a warm and witty romantic comedy about second chances, companionship and discovering that it's never too late for a new beginning. Running October 29 through November 15, 2026, at the Roselle Center for the Arts in Newark, Delaware, this heartfelt production promises an evening of laughter, unexpected romance and a reminder that life's best chapters don't always happen when we expect them.
A Heartwarming Story About Finding Love Again
Based on Annette Sanford's novel Eleanor and Abel and adapted for the stage by playwright Matthew Barber, Fireflies introduces audiences to Eleanor Bannister, a retired teacher enjoying a quiet, predictable life in a small Texas town. That is...until Abel Brown arrives. A mysterious drifter with a personality quite different from Eleanor's, Abel unexpectedly finds his way into her world. As their lives become intertwined, the two discover that companionship, connection and even love can appear in the most surprising circumstances. Blending humor with touching moments, Fireflies explores the courage it takes to open your heart, embrace change and discover a new path forward, no matter your age.
Bringing Fireflies to the Stage
Directed by Paul Mason Barnes, the production features a talented cast of REP company members and guest artists bringing this charming story to life. Elizabeth Heflin stars as Eleanor Bannister, alongside Stephen Pelinski as Abel Brown, Mic Matarrese as Eugene Claymire and guest actor Cathy Burns as Grace Bodell. The creative team includes scenic designer Stefanie Hansen, costume designer Jo Fulmer, lighting designer Lonnie Alcaraz and sound designer and composer Matthew Nielson. With its intimate storytelling, memorable characters and balance of humor and heart, Fireflies is the kind of production that stays with you long after the curtain falls.
