This fall, the Brandywine Museum of Art will unveil a groundbreaking exhibition celebrating the powerful work of Baltimore-based artist Jerrell Gibbs. Brandywine Museum of Art

  • 1 Hoffman's Mill Rd.

Discover an outstanding collection of American art housed in a 19th-century mill with a dramatic steel and glass addition overlooking the banks of the Brandywine River. Renowned for its holdings of…

Known for his expressive, large-scale paintings that center everyday moments in Black life, Gibbs captures the beauty, dignity, and joy of his subjects—often drawn from his own circle of family, friends, and community. His vibrant canvases elevate personal and found imagery into monumental portraits of identity, reflection, and belonging. With more than 30 works drawn from museum and private collections in the U.S. and Europe, the exhibition offers a compelling look at the first decade of Gibbs’s career.

Through his work, Gibbs challenges the underrepresentation of Black life in American art, instead offering images of tenderness, community, and contemplation. Paintings like The Electric Slide (2024) portray joyful celebrations, while Man with Lilacs (2021) presents quiet moments of rest and introspection. His subjects, often surrounded by blooming trees or richly textured interiors, defy tired stereotypes, embodying a full spectrum of lived experience. BMA - Jerrell Gibbs Exhibition

Organized by the Brandywine, this show also represents a milestone for the Museum—it is the institution’s first solo exhibition featuring an emerging contemporary artist. “Jerrell is a painter of astonishing creativity and a storyteller who crafts a world of timeless themes,” said Thomas Padon, James H. Duff Director of the Brandywine Museum of Art. “His vigorous, dazzling brushwork is paired with highly personal imagery evoking contentment and joy. His work also expands on the figurative tradition that has long been part of the Brandywine’s collection.”

The exhibition is guest curated by Angela N. Carroll, a Baltimore-based art historian, writer, and professor. “No Solace in the Shade celebrates the power of human connection, the quiet dignity of everyday life, and the beauty of family,” said Carroll. “This important survey places Gibbs firmly in the long tradition of American figurative painters.”

To accompany the exhibition, the Brandywine and Rizzoli Electa have co-published the first monograph on Gibbs’s work. The richly illustrated catalogue includes essays and conversations with leading voices in the art world, a lyrical poem by filmmaker and poet NIA JUNE, and behind-the-scenes photography documenting Gibbs’s creative process.

Jerrell Gibbs: No Solace in the Shade is made possible with major support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
