The First State is full of historical events such as A Day in Old New Castle, The Wilmington Flower Market and, of course, Separation Day. Rightfully so, being as we are, well, the first state and all – wink, wink.
Wilmington’s 2022 Memorial Day parade, to be held May 30, will be the area’s 155th consecutive observance of this day of remembrance for all who have given their life in service to our country. . The tradition began in 1868, when a group of New Castle County citizens formed a Memorial Day Committee to honor those who died in the Civil War. The purpose of the Memorial Day Parade Committee is to honor and commemorate the service men and women, -of all our nation’s wars, who have made the ultimate sacrifice to assure the freedom we all enjoy today. It’s so very important to pass on the tradition of honoring those who have given their lives for our country.
This year, the Committee will conduct a modified parade and event at the Soldiers and Sailors monument in downtown Wilmington. The event will take place at 6:00 p.m., May 30th. Committee members will lay a wreath and say a few words to honor those who have defended this country.
An evening like this will make you remember the real reason we celebrate Memorial Day.
