If you’ve been on the hunt for a new, romantic escape to explore with your boo, there’s no better destination than Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley. Welcoming accommodations, an incredible food scene, and stunning local spots are just the beginning. Add in relaxing spa trips and winery dates, and you’ve got the makings of a winter getaway worth taking. Follow our lead on where to start.

Charming Inns for a Cozy Couple’s Stay

Nothing says you’ve arrived in Wilmington like checking into HOTEL DU PONT, a 1913 property exuding old-world elegance with its dramatic architectural details. It’s a quintessential stay, plus there’s always a nightcap waiting at the intimate 30-seat Green Room Bar just off the lobby.

Many couples also enjoy staying at Fairville Inn Bed and Breakfast in the heart of the Brandywine Valley. You’ll be minutes from many of the great outdoor spectacles that beckon visitors, like Winterthur and the Brandywine Museum of Art. Savor breakfast and afternoon tea daily, and be sure to book a room with a fireplace and a private deck for the full experience.

For another serene countryside stay, the Inn at Whitewing Farm offers a beautifully restored retreat close to Longwood Gardens and other top regional highlights. This historic property blends classic charm with modern comforts, featuring luxuriously appointed rooms and suites, a tranquil pond, and tennis courts. Warm hospitality and thoughtful details make it an inviting choice for romantic getaways, wedding weekends, or relaxing escapes.

Winter Activities Designed for Two

Wilmington has no shortage of low-key, romantic ways to spend time together. If it’s your first time visiting, make time for a sunset stroll along the Riverfront. The path runs along the Christina River and feels especially peaceful in winter. Walk hand in hand, stop to watch the boats glide by, or duck inside for a drink or coffee when the cold starts to bite.

For those who like to get hands-on, opt for a candle-making class at Make & Mellow, designed for intimate groups in an atmosphere that encourages creativity and connection. Plus, you’ll get to take home an incredible-smelling keepsake to remember for days to come.

Wine Tastings & Fireside Sips

Wintertime is the perfect excuse to hit up many of the region’s tasting rooms and restaurants with fireside seating. Take a drive out to Penns Woods Winery for its signature wine and cheese pairing. Sit inside the tasting room with a view of the vineyard while you sample a gourmet lineup of cheese paired with local honey and jams, complemented by an assortment of wines, of course.

Back in town, Banks Seafood Kitchen and Raw Bar on the Riverfront is a great perch for ordering martinis or splitting a bottle of wine by the fire. Pro tip: They serve some of the city’s best crab cakes and lobsters. Or grab drinks at Park Cafe, a cozy spot serving comfort food with a healthy touch, or head downtown to Tonic Seafood & Steak, known for its fresh ingredients and elevated dining experience.

Spa Retreats for Relaxation Together

Side-by-side massages or lingering in a quiet relaxation room are easy ways to reset and let the rest of the trip unfold at an unhurried pace. The Spa at Montchanin Village is anything but your typical spa; it’s tucked into a collection of historic buildings dating back to 1799. Book a couples massage, or try the Garden of Eden Body Scrub. The 60-minute treatment exfoliates and softens skin, followed by a whipped butter rub-down that leaves you feeling like you’ve shed winter entirely.

Candlelit Dining for a Winter Glow

The James Beard–nominated Italian restaurant Bardea Food & Drink is beloved for its local Delaware Valley–sourced ingredients and is an excellent spot for a romantic dinner. V&M Bistro is another great choice, with its candlelit dining and European-inspired atmosphere, think big Italian-American flavor in an intimate setting.

Scenic Winter Drives Through the Brandywine Valley

One of the easiest ways to explore the Brandywine Valley together is by driving a stretch of the Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway. Beginning in downtown Wilmington, the one-hour route heads north along Route 52, passing historic neighborhoods before opening into rolling countryside, grand estates, and quiet garden landscapes, such as Longwood Gardens.

Through March, it comes alive with Garden Glow, an immersive evening experience. Highlights include Seeking Light: Bonsai Illuminated, where the intricate forms of bonsai trees are revealed under blacklight, and SPARK by artist Daan Roosegaarde, a field of shimmering, biodegradable lights that appear to float through the gardens.
