Located just a few miles off I-95, Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley is an ideal destination for a leisurely weekend getaway. Steeped in history and natural beauty, you’ll find convenience and ease: walkable areas, an exciting food scenetax-free shopping, and plenty of activities and attractions to choose from. We’ve put together some sample weekend itineraries to suggest things to do during your first visit.

One‑Day Snapshot Itinerary

If you’re short on time, consider sticking to Wilmington’s Riverfront area, especially if it’s a beautiful day. Enjoy scenic views as you meander down the 2-mile riverwalk along the Christina River, which passes by many of the area’s attractions and restaurants, allowing you to hop off and check out anything that catches your interest.

For a closer look at local ecology, start at the DuPont Environmental Education Center, a freshwater tidal marsh at one end of the riverwalk that’s home to many birds, mammals, and amphibians, including bald eagles, beavers, and otters. Learn more as you take in the views from the Visitor Center and then see what animals you can spot as you take a short hike around the pond. If you find an injured bird or wildlife, please contact Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, a regional nonprofit organization specializing in the rehabilitation of injured, orphaned, and ill native wild birds.

Once you’ve built up an appetite, grab lunch from one of the vendors at the Riverfront Market, which offers cuisine from around the world, including Mexico, Thailand, Peru, and Hawaii. Then, stroll through The Delaware Contemporary and admire its collection of contemporary art from both regional and internationally recognized artists. Families may prefer the Delaware Children’s Museum and its interactive, hands-on math and science exhibits, while older kids will love the Riverwalk Mini Golf when it’s in season, complete with on‑site ice cream for a sweet finish.

Finish your day with dinner at Banks’ Seafood Kitchen, where fresh ingredients, innovative seafood dishes, and a stylish waterfront atmosphere make for a memorable Riverfront dining experience.

Two‑Day Weekend Itinerary

Planning a weekend in Wilmington offers the chance to slow down and explore a city rich in history, culture, and riverfront charm. This two‑day itinerary highlights signature attractions, local dining, and scenic outdoor spaces, creating a balanced mix of must‑see sights and relaxed moments to enjoy at your own pace.

Day One

Start your weekend in Wilmington by learning about the du Pont family, who brought industry, wealth, and culture to the area after starting a gunpowder mill on the Brandywine River. Explore the French elegance of the Nemours Estate and Gardens with a self-guided tour. Be sure to stop in the Chauffeur’s Garage to see the collection of vintage automobiles.

If you don’t mind driving a few miles outside the city, you may wish to visit Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library instead. While the estate and grounds are stunning, they also hold an extensive collection of American art and craftsmanship that you can peruse.

Spend the rest of your day along the Riverfront, strolling and shopping, before enjoying a walk along the river or catching a Wilmington Blue Rocks game when the team is in town; their home stadium sits right along the water. During basketball season, the Delaware Blue Coats also tip off nearby, giving sports fans another reason to visit the Riverfront throughout the year. If you prefer, catch a live performance at the Delaware Theater Company or watch the latest blockbuster at Delaware’s only IMAX theater, Penn Cinema Riverfront + IMAX

Afterward, head downtown to Del Pez Mexican Gastropub for drinks. Known for its lively atmosphere and mix of bold Latin‑ and Mexican‑inspired flavors, Del Pez is a popular spot to unwind and toast the day.

Day Two

Begin your second day in Wilmington by heading downtown. As you explore, consider following the Market Street Audio Walking Tour, a free, self-guided experience that brings Wilmington’s history and architecture to life. The tour begins at The Queen Theater at Fifth and Market streets and guides you past landmarks such as the Grand Opera House and the historic HOTEL DU PONT, with narration and stories delivered directly to your phone as you walk.

Downtown Wilmington is also full of art galleries, museums, and performance arts centers, so you’ll want to check out our event calendar to see what’s going on during your visit. The Bridge Art Gallery showcases a rotating slate of exciting exhibitions that feature diverse, compelling works from emerging and established artists. Or you can learn more about our history as the First State at the Delaware History Museum

Downtown is known for its restaurants, especially on Market Street. This up-and-coming area has attracted top chefs that rival larger cities like Philadelphia. We recommend Le Cavalier at the Green Room inside HOTEL DU PONT for its French and South African-inspired food and opulent ambiance, or Bardea Food & Drink for innovative Italian cuisine from locally sourced ingredients. For a more casual vibe, head to the Chancery Market Food Hall and Bar, where diverse food vendors offer global flavors, a relaxed yet lively atmosphere, and both indoor and outdoor seating to suit your mood.

If you’d rather trade the city for the outdoors, spend some time walking the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, which offers dramatic views and passes several historic estates. You can hop off and visit the Rockwood Park and Museum, a rural Gothic mansion.

Delaware is also a duty-free state, meaning there’s no sales tax on anything you purchase. That makes it a great place to do a little shopping. You may wish to stop at any boutiques or galleries you come across while you explore. On your way home, consider a detour to Christiana Mall to shop at dozens of your favorite stores, including Apple.
