Step back in time and embrace the nostalgia of the holiday season in Greater Wilmington’s historic, colonial towns. As autumn’s lingering traces fade, the holiday season begins to weave its magic through streets rich with colonial heritage dating back to the 1600s. This December, Historic New Castle and Historic Odessa welcome you to relive the charm of yesteryear, celebrating the season with traditions rooted in their storied past.

On December 14th, Historic New Castle hosts The Spirit of Christmas, a celebration brimming with heartwarming festivities. Wander through beautifully decorated private homes, savor enchanting live music, and be captivated by street performances that capture the spirit of the season. The bustling indoor and outdoor Winter Market offers a selection of unique, handcrafted treasures perfect for holiday gifting, while local food vendors present festive treats for everyone. Children can even meet Santa, making it a day of cherished memories for all. As night falls, the annual Tree Lighting ceremony adds a breathtaking finale to the day, rain or shine—though a snowy touch would make it all the more magical!

But the holiday cheer doesn’t stop there! Venture over to Historic Odessa, where a beautifully preserved colonial townscape invites you to experience Christmas in timeless style. From November 12 to December 29, 2024, the Historic Odessa Foundation presents its annual holiday exhibit and tours at the Corbit-Sharp House, a 250-year-old National Historic Landmark. This year’s exhibit features impressive storytelling. Visitors will be delighted to pretend to “never grow up” as they “walk through” the classic tale of Peter Pan while touring the Darlings’ parlor and nursery, then strolling through neverland to the lost boys’ home, and finally coming on board Captain Hook’s pirate ship.

Mark your calendars for December 7th, when Christmas in Odessa, hosted by the Women’s Club of Odessa, returns for its 60th year. This self-guided tour invites visitors to explore the area’s enchanting 18th and 19th-century buildings, each adorned in festive decor. Guests can enjoy live musical performances, shop at the Christmas Craft & Vendor Fair, and even pick up fresh holiday greens and wreaths to take home.

The historic towns of New Castle and Odessa offer year-round charm, but the holidays bring an extra touch of magic, making them perfect destinations for a Colonial Christmas adventure your family will treasure. Step back in time at Cantwell’s Tavern—originally the Cantwell's Bridge Hotel and Tavern—built in 1822 by businessman William Polk. This enduring community cornerstone has served up hospitality for over a century and offers beloved dishes like Pan-Seared Duck Breast, fresh Seasonal Oysters, and the acclaimed Cantwell’s Crab Dip. Pair your meal with the house favorite, Cantwell’s Old-Fashioned, for an authentic taste of Odessa’s storied past.
