Scenic Drives & Outdoor Escapes 


Delaware’s Bayshore Byway 

Follow the Delaware River along Route 9, also known as the Delaware Bayshore Byway to experience the East Coast’s largest preserved coastal marshland. The 50-mile drive between the New Castle County Courthouse and the John Dickinson Plantation takes roughly an hour and will allow you to see the many sides of Delaware, including coastal towns, farms, forests, and marshlands. 

Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway 

If you’re more interested in culture and history, the Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway will take you past many estates, gardens, and museums, which you can easily pop off to explore. Start on Rodney Square in Wilmington and then take Routes 52 and 100 to the Delaware-Pennsylvania State Line. 

Harriet Tubman Underground Railway Byway 

To better understand the region’s role in the abolitionist movement, follow the Harriet Tubman Underground Railway Byway to known Underground Railroad locations across the state. The Delaware portion begins at the Norman G. Wilder Wildlife Area in Willow Grove and continues through Dover, Smyrna, OdessaNew Castle, and Wilmington. Many sites include museums and monuments that provide historical context to your journey.
