This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Delaware Art Museum invites you to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service, reflection, and action with a meaningful and dynamic MLK Day of Service. On Monday, January 20, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, this free community-focused event will blend art, activism, and collaboration to inspire and connect people of all ages.
The day kicks off with a keynote address by Ali Shah Watson, Delaware's representative in the 2024-25 National Leaders of Color Fellowship program and Executive Director of the Culture Restoration Project, Inc. Known for championing equity and community engagement, Watson’s speech will set the tone for a day dedicated to reflecting on the values that defined Dr. King’s life.
The MLK Day of Service will showcase Wilmington's vibrant arts scene, featuring captivating performances by the Wilmington Children’s Chorus and the high-energy drumline and dance showcase by the Christina Cultural Arts Center. Guests can participate in a hands-on collaborative art activity led by local artist 7God, creating a unique opportunity to explore creativity and unity through art.
Adding a historical lens to the celebration, guided tours of the museum’s “Jazz Age Illustration” exhibition will offer a deep dive into the cultural and artistic innovations of the Jazz Age. The event will also include a symbolic time capsule activity, inviting participants to contribute their reflections and hopes for the future—a gesture that embodies the spirit of collective action and community growth.
DelArt’s MLK Day of Service also emphasizes tangible community support. Attendees are encouraged to contribute to a school supply drive to benefit local schools in the Brandywine and Red Clay School Districts. Essential items like pencils, glue sticks, backpacks, and tissues can be donated before or during the event. Additionally, Delaware Urban Greens will be on-site offering free produce, and a nonprofit fair will connect guests with organizations sharing opportunities for involvement and support.
Light refreshments, including offerings from Wawa, will be available, ensuring a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
This impactful day of reflection, creativity, and service is free to the public, but registration is required. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate Dr. King’s enduring legacy while connecting with the community and embracing the power of art and collective action.
