Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library has taken on its fair share of themed exhibitions in the past, and this May brings an exhibition decorated with Presidential pride (and we’re not talking about the current Delaware native occupying the White House).

In 1961 an unusual partnership was formed between First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (only 31 years old at the time) and Wilmington, Delaware’s own, Henry Francis du Pont, in his 80s. This unexpected duo took on the huge project of restoring the White House interiors, changing the First Family’s home from a public residence to a museum – one of Jackie O’s famed ideas.

Beginning May 7th, for the first time, the story of their partnership will be told. Through numerous artifacts and archives, the exhibition will bring history to life in the halls of Winterthur, where the inspiration for the design began. Visitors will get to see the behind-the-scenes collaboration between the two during this captivating period in American history. Their “restoration” of America’s most famous house became a history lesson for the country and awakened an interest in preservation and interior design that is still felt today.
