Founded in 1945 with their mission to deliver "Opera for All," this pioneering artist-led organization is preparing to launch an extraordinary addition to its storied history: the world premiere of Fearless by acclaimed American composer-librettist Derrick Wang.
Fearless is a musical drama that celebrates the inspiring true story of Hazel Ying Lee, a trailblazing aviator and American hero of World War II. Born in the United States and coming of age during the Great Depression, Hazel defied societal and cultural barriers to become a celebrated member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Her life is a testament to courage, service, and perseverance, and her story has long deserved the spotlight that this new opera will provide.
With its vibrant symphonic score, a majority-women cast, and a narrative that spans continents, Fearless offers a fresh and uplifting portrayal of Hazel’s journey. The creative force behind Fearless is Derrick Wang, celebrated for his ability to fuse storytelling with musical innovation. Known for the critically acclaimed Scalia/Ginsburg and his completion of Puccini’s Turandot, Wang is no stranger to OperaDelaware.

I’m especially delighted to do so through the medium of American opera, which combines the discipline of Old World traditions with the drive and innovation of America—just like Hazel herself.”
Fearless marks OperaDelaware’s third collaboration with Derrick Wang, following the widely praised 2019 production of Scalia/Ginsburg and the 2024 world premiere of his completion of Turandot. The development of Fearless began with a workshop in 2023, supported in part by an OPERA America Repertoire Development Grant, further solidifying OperaDelaware’s reputation as a leader in advancing both the operatic and musical theater repertoires.
