The venerable Playhouse on Rodney Square is one of downtown Wilmington’s most popular destinations, and it’s also one of America’s most unusual theaters. Opened in 1913, this 1,252-seat jewel-box retains the Victorian opulence of early 20th century American entertainment palaces. But if you’ve never visited, you’re in for a surprise – it’s nestled inside another well-known building, the beautiful HOTEL DU PONT

Now over a century old, The Playhouse is the oldest continually operating theater on the Broadway touring circuit, running a full season of national tours and hosting other artists throughout the year. Subscribers and ticket buyers are passionate about its first-class offerings, and this season they’ll flock to The Playhouse for another season of Broadway hits.

The season opens on October 11 with four performances of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. This is the triumphant story of the queen of rock-and-roll and her musical journey to become one of the most beloved artists of our time. Tina Turner Playhouse Broadway Season 2024-2025Initially, Turner herself posed the question of why anyone would want to see a Broadway show about her career. But audiences gave her a rousing answer to the riveting story of Turner’s rise from neglect and abuse to stardom. The musical’s book – told at different eras of her career – was written by Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Katori Hall, and the show featuring her greatest hits has played to sold-out houses since its 2019 Broadway opening.

Next – from November 15-17 – the Playhouse will present Mean Girls, a comedy with bite and a wicked sense of humor. Adapted from the hit movie, this tale of a high-school newbie who falls prey to a trio of mean girls has a starry Broadway pedigree that includes a quartet of show-business luminaries. The book writer is the great Tina Fey (30 Rock and SNL), with composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), whose popular play The Explorer’s Club was seen several seasons ago at the Delaware Theatre Company. The choreography is by Casey Nicholaw, noted for Broadway productions including The Book of Mormon.Mean Girls Broadway Playhouse Season 2025-2025 It’s bound to be a crowd-pleaser.

To get rid of any winter blues, you can head next to The Cher Show: “Superstars come and go. Cher is forever!” For six decades, that powerhouse entertainer has broken down barriers, letting nothing and no one stand in her way. This Tony-winning musical is filled with her powerhouse hits, and three women portray the entertainer, first as a young singer, then as a glamorous pop star, and finally as an icon. The Cher Show will be onstage for three performances January 31 – February 1.

From April 11-13, one of Broadway’s most remarkable shows comes to The Playhouse. Premiering in 2016 and the winner of six Tony Awards, Dear Evan Hansen made theater history as the first musical to deal with the impact – and fallout – of social media on America’s youth and their parents. Poignant, funny, and ultimately moving, this show is a contemporary look at life and the way we live it today.  The Cher Show Playhouse Season 2024-2025

The Playhouse closes its season with Hadestown, the 2019 show that has won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Acclaimed songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative stage director Rachel Chavkin crafted a sung-through work that morphs the ancient Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridyce into something new – a contemporary musical look at how a song can change your life. The highly praised show is still running on Broadway, and its national tour will play four performances from May 2-4 in Wilmington.

If you haven’t been to The Playhouse, you owe yourself a visit. If you’ve seen a show there, you know what a special theater it is!
