The Delaware Historical Society was founded in May 1864 for “the elucidation of history, particularly such portions as may refer to Delaware.” The mission of the Delaware Historical Society today is serve as the statewide, non-profit organization that preserves, explores, shares and promotes Delaware history, heritage and culture to strengthen our community. The Delaware Historical Society Downtown Wilmington Campus is comprised of the Delaware History Museum, Old Town Hall, Willingtown Square, and the Research Library. The New Castle Campus is the site of the Read House & Gardens, a historic house museum.
