Holiday shopping doesn’t have to be a pain. No one needs to endure last-minute panics over Aunt Nan’s nonexistent present. There is a way to turn our collective festive angst into an adventure and a meal. 

Here’s how I do it: Take a weekend afternoon, grab a big-ol’ coffee, and take a deep dive into Delaware’s cozy little food shops. Breathe in the amazing aromas, enjoy the frosty December bustle, then snag an armful of goodies that look scrumptious, or just cute, or maybe even a bit mysterious. 

They’re sprinkled everywhere at these local gourmet grocery favorites, but be forewarned: The temptation to over-buy will be strong. And don’t even pretend you can (or should) resist showering yourself with a few gifts.  

THE MEAT HOUSE MARKET, 200 Wilmington-West Chester Pike (U.S. 202), Chadds Ford, PA 

Hard-to-find butcher cuts are all top grade here, and the marketplace is stuffed with intriguing gourmet groceries. The selection of holiday-accented prepared foods means you may never cook for the in-laws again.

This is your one stop shop for prime meats … and pastries and cakes … and practically any upscale treat you can imagine. A gloriously cozy and congenial place. (Good To Know: They also sell pizza to go!)

Top-notch gourmet experience excels in fine cheeses, meats, and uber-gourmet goodies. A must-visit for the holiday vibe and upper-crust character. (Pro Tip: Power up at the appealing J’s Cafe.)
