From the opening oompahs of the Friday night parade until the last bratwurst is gone, the Delaware Saengerbund Oktoberfest in Newark, Delaware is a three-day celebration of German culture, food and beer. The opening parade is held on Friday at 7:00 PM and is led by the Muenchner Kindl or Munich Child. Entertainment is continuous. The Delaware Saengerbund's Bavarian dance group performs at intervals throughout the festival; the men are dressed in lederhosen and women wear dirndls. Almwind, Heidi and Heimat Echo, and the Enzian Musikanten provide German music. Amusement rides and midway games are included with admission. The ethnic food is delicious and includes a selection of grilled Bratwurst, Weisswuurst, Frankfurters, BBQ chicken, rollmops, potato pancakes, sauerkraut, and a variety of torten and traditional plum cake complimented by genuine German beer.
Remote parking is available at the Christiana High School for $5.00 on Friday and Saturday and is free on Sunday; shuttle service to and from the festival.
