The Yorklyn Limited takes riders on a leisurely hour and a half round trip. It leaves the choice to the rider to stop at Mt. Be sure to double check the routes when booking. This trip is powered by Wilmington & Western Railroad’s historic first-generation diesel locomotive, their 1929 Pennsylvania Railroad Doodlebug railcar, or one of their antique steam locomotives!

Doodlebug Days
Varying dates May through September
Departure: 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM & 3:30 PM
Boarding: 15 minutes before departure
Enjoy the beauty of the Red Clay Valley on a one hour round trip to Yorklyn aboard Wilmington & Western Railroad’s unique 1929 “Doodlebug” Railcar Number 4662, which once served the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad. The Doodlebug is self-propelled and features both passenger seating and baggage storage. Doodlebug railcars used to be used on lightly-used branch lines where it was not economical to operate a multi-car, locomotive-hauled train. WWRR’s Doodlebug railcar is one of only two Doodlebugs from the Pennsylvania Railroad to still exist. Seating is limited so be sure to make reservations early to experience this historic piece of railroad equipment!
Brandywine Springs Historic Express
Saturday, May 20th
Departure: 10:00 AM
Boarding: 9:45 AM
This ride stops at one of the most historically significant locations along Wilmington & Western Railroad’s tracks, Brandywine Springs Park. Brandywine Springs Park was the site of a hotel and amusement park in the late 1800s and early 1900s and features a fun house, pony rides, a dance hall, a lake, a bandstand, and even an early wooden roller coaster. Many of those that visited came via the trains operated by the Wilmington and Western! The park closed in 1923 and is now a New Castle County park. This history-focused excursion provides the opportunity to explore the park with a Friends of Brandywine Springs guide to help point out significant areas and amusements. The walking tour will take approximately an hour and a half, afterwards the train will continue to Mt. Cuba’s Picnic grove and then return, totaling around two and half hours in total. This event is powered by the Railroad’s historic 1929 Pennsylvania Railroad Doodlebug Railcar!
Superhero Express
Sunday, May 21st
Departure: 12:30 PM & 3:30 PM
Boarding: 30 minutes before departure
Last but not least, the final event (for now) is the Superhero Express! The Wilmington & Western has been attacked by the infamous Dad Joker and their team of superheroes and need your help! Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure to participate in their hero training course, then don your favorite disguise and join the superheroes for an epic and hilarious character excursion with four famous superheroes! The WWRR is partnering with Sew Classy Royal Events to host this event. This is an hour and a half long round trip to Ashland, powered by one of the Railroad’s historic first-generation diesel locomotives! Good luck heros!
With countless events on these incredible historic trains, Wilmington & Western Railroads spring lineup will surely be fun for the whole family! But the fun doesn't stop there... be sure to check back for dates in the fall for prime leaf peeping rides and during the holiday season when Santa makes his way to Wilmington & the Brandywine Valley!
