National Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of Hispanic American culture, history and achievement that runs from September 15 through October 15. What began as a commemorative week when it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 is now a month-long celebration since being extended by President Ronald Regan in 1988. The observance begins on September 15 as it marks the anniversary of the independence of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

Greater Wilmington is home to a thriving Hispanic and Latino population. Its celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month will kick off Sunday, September 17 with the Hispanic Heritage Festival, sponsored by Hoy en Espanol. The event will take place at Bellevue State Park from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will feature an exploration of delicious Latino cuisine, dance performances, awards for accomplishments made by the Latino communities in the area, and much more.

There will also be several other events throughout the month aligning with Hispanic Heritage Month that will continue to serve as a venue to honor the vibrant and varied contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, encouraging a deeper appreciation and understanding of cultures within the larger American society. To learn more about events happenings in Greater Wilmington during Hispanic Heritage Awareness month, please look at our events calendar or check out the list below.
