When is a fork more than a fork? How does a kitchen towel become elevated to the level of art? And what's with painting decorations on the sides of barns? It would seem that everything made by Pennsylvania Germans was seen as an opportunity to embellish. And a new exhibit at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, A Colorful Folk: Pennsylvania Germans and the Art of Everyday Life, pays homage to these creative people, all the while looking to better understand them and their contributions to American culture. The exhibit runs from now until Jan. 3, 2016.
