Nemours Mansion and Gardens has reopened for guided tours. Built in 1909 in the style of a grand Louis XVI -style French chateau, Alfred I. du Pont's mansion has been returned to its turn-of- the-century elegance and features an exquisite collection of artwork, antiques and tapestries. The grounds surrounding the mansion are arguably the finest example of a formal French garden in North America with reflecting ponds, incredible sculptures, parterres and a huge fleur de lis jardin.
Tours originate at the newly constructed Visitors Center located at the intersection of Route 141 and Alapocas Drive. Inside the Visitors Center, a detailed time line supported by a collection of black & white sepia prints traces Alfred I. du Pont's life and accomplishments. Each tour begins with a ten minute film about Alfred I. du Pont featuring original photos and footage. Guests are then transported via shuttle buses to the mansion for a 1 ½ hour guided tour.
Nemours has expanded its schedule and is now offering tours at 9:00AM, 12:00PM and 3:00PM on Tuesday through Saturday and 12:00PM and 3:00PM on Sunday. Reservations are required. For more information, go to www.nemoursmansion.org or www.visitwilmingtonde.com.
