The name Du Pont has been synonymous with Delaware and the Brandywine Valley ever since family patriarch E. I. du Pont founded the DuPont Company in 1802 as a gunpowder mill along the banks of the Brandywine River. With success of the company came great wealth to the family, members of which built spectacular mansions and gardens in northern Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania. Several of the more jaw-dropping of those mansions have been converted to museums that showcase the grandeur and elegance of a bygone era. Combine these with the area's gardens, museums and wineries, and you have the makings of a perfect girlfriends' getaway or a romantic weekend.
