Longwood Gardens’ Autumn’s Colors comes each year when Greater Wilmington’s crisp fall air is at its peak. On view October 2 through November 14, surround yourself in the daily shifts of the season’s hues and textures as the days grow shorter and sweeping fields of gold and amber paint the landscape.
October 16 marks the arrival of the Gardens’ annual Chrysanthemum Festival, transforming the Conservatory into a vibrant, colorful view of chrysanthemum blooms. Iconic three-dimensional pieces will showcase Longwood’s horticultural expertise while preserving an ancient artform practiced throughout Japan and China. Enjoy live music under a canopy of fall color in the Beer Garden Thursday–Saturday evenings, and a spectacular Illuminated Fountain Performance set to music at 8:15 pm, both through October 30. For tickets, visit longwoodgardens.org.
From falling leaves to blooming wildflowers, the 86-acre Meadow Garden reaches its peak in autumn with its many layers of beauty. The Garden Railway features an enchanting display of G-scale model trains that ramble through a whimsical landscape complete with miniature Longwood landmarks. Children of all ages will enjoy the Pumpkin Playground, on view October 9 through October 31.
Chrysanthemum Festival Marks 40th Year
Since 1981, Longwood has showcased spectacular blooming chrysanthemums grown and shaped into unique three-dimensional forms during this month-long celebration. This year, the display features a record number of forms, with more than 50 large-scale cascade chrysanthemums nurtured and trained using techniques first practiced in Japan and China. From fanciful clouds and umbrellas, to shields and spirals, more than 5,000 chrysanthemums are used in this extraordinary blend of horticulture and artistry. A highlight of this year’s display is the Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, a single chrysanthemum plant grown to produce as many perfect blooms as possible.
