Wilmington Weather Overview

Flowers begin to bloom as the SPRINGTIME settles in over the region during the months of April and May. Temperatures climb steadily into the SUMMER months and stay warm from June through August, which is when you'll see people kayaking and tubing down our local rivers to beat the heat. Cooler weather arrives by the end of September, and the leaves begin to change in early October. (The Brandywine Valley is renown for its beauty at the height of the FALL foliage season, which usually runs from mid October through very early November.)

Sweater season tends to linger until early December when the WINTER jackets come out, and while we do have an occasional white Christmas, most of the snow that comes falls between January and March. Most winters see one or two significant snowfalls and a cold snap that might freeze local lakes and streams - as well as the ice skating rink on the WILMINGTON RIVERFRONT.

What to Wear

SPRING - As spring flowers bloom, the weather can change quickly. Layer up, and prepare for evening showers in the late spring.

SUMMER - Summer can get hot in the Mid-Atlantic. Plan on shorts if you'll be outside for long stretches, and bring water.

FALL - As the leaves start to change, temps take a dip - but won't get too cold until after Thanksgiving.
It's sweater weather, with highs usually in the 60s.

WINTER - Average highs are the upper 40s and lows are below freezing, but wind chill can make it feel colder. Significant snowstorms are infrequent, but can happen.
