Mt Cuba CenterIt could take days to explore all that the gardens in the glorious outdoors of the Wilmington, Delaware and the Brandywine Valley. Consider starting at the Read House and Gardens in historic Old New Castle. The cobblestone streets of the city are beautiful in the morning, as is a cup of coffee at Penn's Place. From there, you'll head north to Greenville, where you can hike the trails behind the Delaware Museum of Natural History before touring the grounds of Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library.

The next day, take the northern route through the Brandywine Valley, starting with 600 acres of thoughtfully designed grounds at the Mt. Cuba Center. Drive a little past Longwood Gardens (you'll come back) to the Brandywine River Museum, where you can witness the natural beauty of the region in brilliant oils and watercolor - as well as in person, in the native plant garden. After that, backtrack to Longwood Gardens, a beautiful place to be as the sun goes down at any time of the year.
