Delaware & the Civil War

Fort Delaware, Delaware City DelawareBegin your morning with a ferry ride into the middle of the Delaware River to visit Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, home to 11,000 Confederate prisoners of war in 1863. (Reserve a spot on the ferry in advance. They only run in season.)

Enjoy some seafood for lunch in Delaware City before heading north on Route 9 on the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, which will bring you into historic Old New Castle, a key stop for many escaping slaves headed to freedom in Pennsylvania. From there, it’s a short trip to the Hagley Museum and Library, where you’ll learn about the du Pont family’s gunpowder mills that ran for 120 years, supplying much of the Civil War.
