And, with its close proximity to New York, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley is just far enough away and just close enough to home.

Between all the local holiday displays, the tax-free shopping destinations, and Sunday brunch at Deerfield Golf Club, a relaxing weekend in Wilmington is often just what the doctor ordered to get you through another holiday season.

If a great weekend escape is in your holiday season plans greater Wilmington is the perfect location, and we have pulled together the must-see holiday attractions that you will want to experience for yourself.

A Longwood ChristmasVisit Our Local Holiday Displays

If you are making the trip to Wilmington for a relaxing holiday weekend, the first thing that should be on your to-do list is checking out some of our most popular holiday displays. Nothing puts you into the holiday spirit quite like an overabundance of greenery and mistletoe, and we have three special places that stand out above the rest.

The Hagley Museum goes all out for the holiday season with elaborate dining room decorations, an astounding number of Christmas trees, and some DuPont family heirlooms that are not displayed at any other time of the year. They also switch up some of the rooms in the mansion during this time to show what life was like here in the winter months back when the DuPont family occupied the home.

The Winterthur Museum is another famous home in the Brandywine Valley that is always perfectly decorated for the holiday season. In addition to the amazing trees that you can find here every year, they are also debuting a new “dollhouse mansion” that will also be decorated for the holidays this year.

One final holiday display that will absolutely blow your mind is the indoor and outdoor display at Longwood Gardens. A Longwood Christmas includes an 18-foot tree in the music room, as well as three fire pits and some of the most amazing outdoor light displays you will ever see.

Another reason to spend a holiday weekend in Wilmington is that you can buy all those expensive holiday gifts without having to pay any sales tax. That’s right, there is no state sales tax here in Delaware, so you are free to shop until you drop!

Whether you are looking for fancy electronics from the Apple Store or a high-end pair of jeans from True Religion, you can find all your favorite brand names at the Christiana Mall. There are over 140 different stores here, as well as some great quick-service and full-service restaurants to keep you fueled up.

Another option for even more choices is the Concord Mall, where you will find stores like American Eagle, Macy’s, Footlocker, Victoria’s Secret, and New York & Company. There is also a Best Buy and a Verizon store here for all your technology needs.

If mall shopping doesn’t produce that amazingly original holiday gift that you were hoping for, another place to look is the gift shops at some of our local museums. Each of them offer a different collection of interesting and historic items, and again, none of them are going to charge you sales tax.
