Tax-free Shopping

Do you cater to readers (or viewers) who might be looking for bargains? Delaware’s shopping is always tax-free, and shoppers have plenty of choices in Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley. From high-end department stores and malls to locally owned boutiques and one-of-a-kind museum shops, it’s all here.

The state’s largest mall, Christiana Mall, sits right off I-95, making it easily accessible to shoppers. With four anchors and nearly 200 shops altogether (including popular favorites like H&M, Apple, LEGO, Lululemon, Michael Kors, Tesla, Sephora, and Williams Sonoma), it’s easy to spend hours wandering and browsing. Prepare to walk away with lasting memories — just like basketball great Charles Barkley, who named his daughter “Christiana” in honor of the mall.

On the other side of Wilmington, you’ll find the state’s second-largest mall: Concord Mall. Macy’s is an anchor here as well, and you’ll find other well-known brands like Bath & Body Works, H&M and streetwear favorite Zumiez. But what truly sets Concord Mall apart is its lineup of locally owned vendors and retailers. They include Cleopatra, an indie boutique that specializes in clothing and jewelry imported from the Middle East, and City Blue, a youth-oriented clothing store.

We have our share of charming boutiques too, such as Town & Shore Handcrafted and Morgan’s of Delaware in Wilmington. But the heartland of local boutique shopping lies in our small towns. Take Bellefonte, right on the northern outskirts of Wilmington, with its vibrant Shops of Bellefonte along Brandywine Boulevard.

Greenville and Centerville, to the northwest of Wilmington, are the local names most closely associated with upscale shopping. Greenville Crossing is an essential stop where you’ll find more than a dozen food and retail options, including smart women’s fashions at the Wilmington Country Store. Right across Route 52 from Greenville Crossing, there are plenty more shopping and dining options at Powder Mill Square. In Centreville, home décor and gift shops like Adorn Goods and Shish Interiors are just waiting to be discovered.

You’ll find more than 80 eclectic boutiques on and around the Main Street of Newark, Delaware, such as record store Wonderland, Aunt Margaret’s Antique Mall and gift shop Grassroots. Find a comprehensive directory of Main Street businesses at mainstreetnewark.com

Or, in Historic New Castle, visit the farmer’s market for a modern-day treasure hunt at this flea market where indoor and outdoor vendors sell Pennsylvania Dutch food, pastries, socks, jewelry, and more.

For truly unique souvenirs, museum shops are a great bet. The Delaware Art Museum, Delaware Contemporary, Delaware History Museum, Delaware Museum of Nature and Science, and Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library all have shops worth lingering in.
