Have you ever sailed on a square-rigged colonial ship? Kalmar Nyckel, The Tall Ship of Delaware, is a full scale replica of the merchant ship that brought Swedish settlers to North America in 1638, to begin establishing the colony of New Sweden (Delaware). Guests are invited to haul lines, set sails, and enjoy maritime tales of the original Kalmar Nyckel - or just relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the water. Kalmar Nyckel is available for day sails, pirate sails, dockside tours, private parties/charters during the sailing season. Educational programming and exhibits are offered year-round to thousands of school children at the Copeland Maritime Center at the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard campus. Opportunities to join the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation and volunteer on land and water abound - you can learn to sail this ship! Visit www.kalmarnyckel.org, or call on weekdays: (302) 429-7447 and follow us on Facebook. Online tickets for sails can be purchased at www.kalmarnyckel.org/BookASail.asp. The Tatiana and Gerret Copeland Maritime Center on the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard campus opened two new permanent exhibits (May 2018): Kalmar, Sweden – Key to the Kingdom pays homage to the original ship’s namesake city of Kalmar – (Wilmington’s Sister City in Sweden) and an exhibit on the Science of Sailing. The center is open to the public for self-guided tours with museum quality galleries on the rich history of the Kalmar Nyckel, “Watercraft of the World” featuring a collection of 73 model ships and boats and Wilmington’s history of shipbuilding and railcar production in the Riverfront Room. Hours are Monday-Friday, 1:30 pm-4:30 pm, Saturdays, 10 am-4 pm, and from Memoiral Day to Labor Day: Sundays 12-4 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children. Summer 2018: Kalmar Nyckel returns to Historic New Castle's beautiful restored Public Dock on June 1 and 2 and offers days sails in Wilmington at Dravo Plaza on the Riverfront and her home berth (1124 E. 7th St., Wilmington). She will be present for the Wilmington Riverfront fireworks on July 4th! The schedule includes day sails in Lewes, DE, Solomons Island, MD, Provincetown, MA, the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston, NY, and again in Historic New Castle, Wilmington, DE, and Baltimore, MD. Kalmar Nyckel is available for private cruises for social and corporate events, team building, reunions, and special occasions with a maximum capacity of 49 passengers. Please inquire!
