This exhibit commemorates the centennial of World War I and explores Delaware’s participation, offering visitors a window to the experiences and sacrifices of Delawareans on both the warfront and homefront. The exhibition brings the war to life by highlighting the Delaware Historical Society’s rich collections, including a soldier’s muddy boots and garrison cap, a flag from a Gold Star family, letters to loved ones, scrapbooks, victory medals, and a wealth of wartime propaganda posters. Individually, these items tell some fascinating stories about Delawareans living through a conflict that awakened them to a new global reality. Together, they paint a broader picture that speaks to the very human cost of war. Visitors to the exhibition will be transported to 1917 as they explore differing attitudes toward the United States’ entry into World War I, the experience of African American soldiers, and the many organizations and activities at home that supported the war effort abroad. They will learn about efforts to document the experiences of Delaware veterans when they returned from overseas, and reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Finally, visitors will learn how to preserve and protect Delaware’s invaluable collection of World War I service records for future generations.
