Looking for something fun and educational to do with the kids while they're out of school for the summer? Join us for hands-on crafts and games based on things in the museum, garden, and library, which teach kids, ages 3–10, about color, line, form, and other elements of art. Special guests will be on hand to highlight skills and trades from the past and present. Each week will feature new activities and guests:

July 3: Shape - Embroidered pockets and quilts with geometric patterns inspire bright suncatchers and hand-decorated canvas pouches.

July 10: Color - Activities focus on the science of color and the use of color theory in garden and interior design. We’ll make 3D glasses and use dried flowers to create collages.

July 17: Texture - Discover the variety of textures represented in the museum and garden, from bristly pine trees to soft merino sheep.

July 24: Line - Snakes, maps, and more are creatively interpreted with felt, puzzles, and other games. Timelines provide additional inspiration.

July 31 - Explore the concept of form as it pertains to origami, slime, and even geometric bubbles.

August 7: Value - When you think of value, money may be the first thing that comes to mind, but value also suggests the lightness and darkness of color. Learn about white and black and all the tints and shades in between as we create self-portraits, disguise boxes as gems, and explore rudimentary photography.

August 14: Pattern - Do your kids keep repeating themselves? If so, this week is for them, as we create patterns that are planned such as those in kaleidoscopes.

August 21: Space - Our projects this week explore the concepts of positive and negative space as well as the idea of how objects appear in relation to each other. Screen printing and perspective drawing will be some of the fun.

August 28: Color - There’s so much to the world of color that this topic is worth returning to! We’ll revisit a few familiar topics and introduce a few others as we explore the spectrum of visible light.
