The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation announces the installation of two new permanent exhibits at its Copeland Maritime Center.  One exhibit highlights the Science of Sailing while the other, titled Kalmar, Sweden – Key to the Kingdom, pays homage to the original ship’s namesake city of Kalmar – which is also Wilmington’s Sister City in Sweden.

The Copeland Maritime Center is open to the public for tours, allowing visitors to learn about the original Kalmar Nyckel, which brought Swedish settlers to what would become modern-day Wilmington in 1638. The building also includes the “Watercraft of the World” exhibit, which features an extraordinary collection of 73 model ships and boats gathered from around the globe, and the Riverfront Room, which houses the Wilmington – Industrial Powerhouse exhibit detailing the city’s incredible history of shipbuilding and railcar production.  The center is available for self-guided tours from Monday-Friday from 2 pm-4:30 pm or by appointment, and on Saturdays from 10:00 am-2:00 pm.
