Delve into the maritime marvels of Wilmington's Underground Railroad this Black History Month with the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF). On Saturday, February 3, from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., KNF will illuminate the captivating story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad through a family-friendly event.
Children of all ages are invited to embark on their own educational journey by participating in hands-on activities like building a freedom schooner and finding the North Star. As a reward for their efforts, young participants will receive age-appropriate illustrated children's books about the Underground Railroad. Sail handling and storytelling activities will engage young minds, and face painting will be available for a small fee. Central to the program is a not-to-be-missed 2:30 p.m. performance of "HARRIET TUBMAN" by the accomplished actor-historian, Dr. Daisy Century of the American Historical Theatre. Dr. Century's solo act will transport audiences back in time, bringing Harriet Tubman's remarkable journey to life. Following the performance, a Q&A session will provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions diving deeper into this pivotal chapter of history.
Attendees will also get the opportunity to explore the Copeland Maritime Center, where model ships and maritime exhibits await, adding an extra layer of nautical fascination to the event. Weather permitting, guided tours of "The Rocks" in Fort Christina Park will offer insights into the historic site where freedom seekers embarked on boats and met "conductors" on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. This same site marks the landing spot of the original Kalmar Nyckel in 1638, utilizing "The Rocks" in Fort Christina Park as a natural wharf for safe landings.
Building on the success of KNF's Underground Railroad Superhero Day in August 2023 and 2022 at Fort Christina Park, this event promises a fresh and highly relevant perspective on local history. Join KNF in navigating the waters of history and celebrating the enduring legacy of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Admission and parking are free.
