Cycling in Wilmington & New Castle County
The Wilmington Bicycle Advisory Committee, formed in 2010, is petitioning for the League of American Bicyclists' designation as a bike friendly city. The Wilmington and New Castle County area offer some great bicycling opportunities.
Market Street in Downtown Wilmington is marked as a shared road for cars and cyclists. Using caution, ride north on Market Street toward the Brandywine River and you'll discover one of the city's most beautiful parks, named after the river it surrounds. North and South Park Drive offer wonderful views of the Brandywine River and are lightly traveled. There's also sidewalks, but be sure to yield to pedestrians.
Uphill and northwest of Brandywine Park is Kentmere Parkway which leads to Rockford Park and its famous landmark, Rockford Tower. Families can easily spend an entire day in this park enjoying a pleasant ride or just sun bathing on the open lawns.
More aggressive cyclists should ride out Route 52 to Route 82, which will take you on a challenging ride along the scenic Red Clay Creek. Daydream a bit and imagine this region hundreds of years ago; some spots look as though time has stood still. For regular recreational rides, check www.whiteclaybicycleclub.org.
Just south of Wilmington is the historic town of New Castle. A bike path starts in New Castle and heads north toward Wilmington for a few miles to the banks of the Christina River. It's a great ride and, of course, there's no vehicular traffic. Maps are available at www.bikede.org/newcastle_wilm.pdf.
