The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, a non-collecting museum founded in 1979, presents close to 30 exhibitions every year of regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists that explore topical issues in contemporary art and society in its seven galleries.
Exhibiting American art in a19th-century grist mill, the Brandywine River Museum is internationally known for its unparalleled collection of works by three generations of Wyeths and its fine collection of American illustration, still life and landscape painting; the N. C. Wyeth House & Studio and the Kuerner Farm are open for tours spring through fall; opening June 11, 2011 "Farm Work by Jamie Wyeth" features Wyeth's lively depictions of farm animals, equipment, and surrounding landscapes.
The Delaware Art Museum holds a renowned collection that focuses on American art and illustration as well as the British Pre-Raphaelites; opening May 21, 2011 "Perception/Deception: Illusion in Contemporary Art" explores reality and perceptions of the world around us through the use of shadow play, lights, mirrors, and complex mathematical equations.
Tour the 175-room house at Winterthur, the premier museum of American decorative arts, to see exquisite spaces in which Henry Francis du Pont entertained family and friends in grand style; in the Galleries, unique displays crafted by Winterthur curators showcase selections from the collection of more than 85,000 objects; opening April 2, 2011 "Paint, Pattern & People" delves into the stunning and diverse furniture of southeastern Pennsylvania and the people who made, owned, inherited, and collected it.
