For over thirty years Somerville Manning Gallery has specialized in paintings by the Wyeth family. The 4th American Masters exhibition continues to follow the artworks of N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth and the artists of their eras. The show of original paintings explores over 100 years of masters in the American art world. Along with paintings by N.C. Wyeth, will be works by American impressionist, Maurice Prendergast, American realists, Robert Henri and George Bellows, and Philadelphia native, Thomas Pollock Anshutz, among others.Paintings by the father of abstract expressionist, Hans Hofmann, will coincide with the Post-War period in which Andrew Wyeth was exploring realism. American modernists, Milton Avery and Alfred Henry Maurer will also be featured along side the Andrew Wyeth paintings, representing other realist painters in this period. The exhibition includes other works from many important American schools and traditions that transition from realism to abstraction, including The Ashcan School, The Eight, the Stieglitz circle, and Western art.

The Historic Odessa Foundation archives contain numerous original letters from many of the family members who lived in the Foundation’s 18th century houses. Among them are letters from Captain Charles Corbit, son of Henry C. Corbit, to his beloved wife Louisa Anderson Corbit, daughter of Daniel Corbit and Eliza Naudain of Odessa. Captain Corbit was an officer in the First Delaware Cavalry Regiment and was stationed at several locations on the eastern shore. He is recognized as a hero of the small skirmish at an important rail and road junction in Westminster, Maryland (on what is now the campus of McDaniel College) on June 29, 1863, where he led 90 men in a charge against the larger numbers of Jeb Stuart’s cavalry. It resulted in capture of most of the Delaware soldiers, including Corbit who was also wounded, but was significant for delaying Stuart’s arrival at the battle of Gettysburg. The Corbit letters concentrate in the years 1863 to early 1865 and document many aspects of a soldier’s everyday life. Captain Corbit tells of the billeting of officers in local hotels and their horses in town stables. The letters are revealing of the harsh conditions, ailments and complaints of the men, and touching for their homesickness, and frank comments on both politicians and military leaders. During his time at the front lines in 1864 his wife, while living in St. George’s, Delaware, just 3 miles north of Odessa, informs him their only son has died. Captain Corbit’s letters are addressed "Dear Lou" his nickname for his wife Louisa and usually end with “Your Affectionate Husband Charles”.The exhibit also includes a number of Civil War objects and an elegant period dress of the era in the HOF collection that belonged to Mary Corbit Warner. The exhibit will be in the Historic Odessa Bank building from May 7 through August 2. Save the date April 26th to meet Louisa Corbit (played by HOF librarian Rita Ryor) for an evening candlelight tour of the Corbit-Sharp House followed by wine and savories in the Collins-Sharp House. Watch our website for announcements of lectures on the exhibit.

For two weeks only, visitors to the Kuerner Farm will hear Kuerner Sounds, a pop-up experience by noted Philadelphia-based artist and composer Michael Kiley, as part of the guided tour of the historic property. A working farm located in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Kuerner Farm served as a site of creative inspiration for artist Andrew Wyeth for more than 70 years. Wyeth's attraction to the farm involved all of his senses, including hearing, and his works depicting the site evoke the richness of his experiences there. To create Kuerner Sounds, Kiley manipulated existing sounds from the farm and layered them with original tones to create an atmospheric piece representing his personal aural response to the site. Intended to bring attention to both the creative process of the artist and the specific sound qualities of the farm, this temporary installation is supported by the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.Tours of the farm including the sound element leave from the museum daily at 2 and 3:15 p.m. and cost $8 in addition to regular museum admission. Tickets are limited and may be purchased in advance online or by calling 610-388-8326. Same day tickets may be available at the museum admission desk.

This epic and seldom performed work, composed in 1947, depicts the crucifixion of Jesus on a grand scale, requiring huge choral resources and a virtuoso organ accompaniment. Under the direction of David Christopher, DVC will be joined by organist and Elmore protégé, Robert Plimpton of San Diego, California, who performed the work with the composer. Grant Youngblood (baritone), a well-known and favorite artist from Delaware, will sing the role of Christ, joined by Melanie Sarakatsannis, soprano, Ruth Bailis, mezzo-soprano, and Dana Robertson, tenor. The first half of the program will feature two other important 20th century works by Benjamin Britten, Rejoice the Lamb and Festival Te Deum.

Functional and artistic, weathervanes roosted over American buildings both humble and high style-barns and banks, churches and courthouses. Viewed today as folk art, weathervanes were one of the earliest sculptural forms in the United States. Weathervane forms run the gamut through history beginning at the Temple of the Winds in ancient Athens, where the figure of Triton-cleverly designed to always face the direction of the wind-topped the structure. In America, colonial craftsmen fashioned unique weathervanes, such as Shem Drowne's grasshopper atop Boston's Faneuil Hall, which were later imitated, mass-produced and offered through mail-order catalogues. The exhibition, which will include 28 weather-vanes, covers the variety of forms popular in this country as well as the finer points of interest to collectors including finishes, manufacturers and matters of authenticity.
