The scenic backdrop of the Brandywine River inspires a newly commissioned work by Brooklyn-based artist Matthew Jensen. The installation derives from immersive walks taken by Jensen throughout the summer months in the landscapes along the Brandywine and its tributaries. The verdant slopes, quiet footpaths, native flora, historic towns and small discoveries are all subjects in Jensen’s photographic work. The artist is known for embracing new photographic technology as means to explore landscape and he will continue to push the medium with this new work.  The resulting images and found objects will be displayed in a setting designed by the artist in the Museum’s third floor corridor, directly juxtaposed with the landscape that inspired the work. A map created by Jensen will invite visitors to explore the environment surrounding the Museum.

Over his remarkable seven-decade career, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) created thousands of drawings in graphite and watercolor, a body of work that he rarely exhibited. The drawings in this exhibition provide a fascinating glimpse into his creative process. They were created by Wyeth in preparation for four paintings—Faraway (1952), Corner of the Woods (1954), Roasted Chestnuts (1956), and Garret Room (1962). Each drawing is part of the process Wyeth used to work out his vision for his paintings. Many were sketched outdoors and reveal Wyeth’s immediate response to figures or objects in a composition. The exhibition includes 23 drawings and three paintings.

Priceless antiquities. Ruthless grave robbers. International criminals who rob the cultural heritage of Italy, trading in goods stolen from the necropolises of Tarquinia to the posh auction houses of London, England, from the seedy underbelly of the black market to world-renown museums.Ripped from the case files of the Guardia di Finanza, stories like these will be told during “Treasures and Tales of Italy’s Guardia di Finanza Art Recovery Team,” a groundbreaking exhibition of priceless works of Etruscan and Greco-Roman art and craftsmanship, on display at The Grand Opera House from Oct. 3-Dec. 21.Each ancient ceramic, mosaic and statue in the exhibit tells a story, not just of the time of its creation, but also of its theft and recovery by the indefatigable agents of the Gruppo Tutela Patrimonio Archeologico, the art recovery team inside the Guardia di Finanza. The Guardia di Finanza, with headquarters in Rome, is Italy’s national law enforcement agency tasked with fighting financial crime and recovering stolen art and artifacts.

Their initial performances (on Austin City Limits and at Lincoln Center''s American Songbook Series) have been widely heralded for the seamless harmony of the three singers, the unassailable virtuosity of the players, and the obvious if uncommon chemistry the young artists have found with one another. This Fall, they are presenting it, fully realized for the first time, in a limited tour of some of the country''s finest symphony halls and performing arts theaters. The powerful theatrical adaptation of one of the world’s favorite novels is the next production at the Wilmington Drama League.“To Kill a Mockingbird” runs Oct. 24-Nov. 2 for the public, and considering its importance to students in the literary canon, the gripping drama will also be performed separately for schools. Its themes of justice and racial relationships resonate particularly strongly this year, in the aftermath of recent distress in Ferguson, Missouri. The play is based on the 1960 Pulitzer-winning novel by Harper Lee, and a version is performed each year in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. The Drama League production is directed by Allyson Sands Good. It follows Scout, the young girl who is wiser than her years, and her father Atticus, a lawyer defending a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman.  Tickets are $20, $17 seniors, $12 students, with group discounts as well. For tickets, call or visit our website. Wilmington Drama League programs are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to enhancing and supporting the arts in Delaware. Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day.Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last minute cancellation in 2002 at the Portland club "Dante's" turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn't long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was about to be launched onto the international stage. Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she will be featured on their upcoming CD, Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in May 2013, singing Weill's Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music festival. The NY Times called her "sensational," and the classical music world instantly had a new star. Cariad Harmon will bring a welcome dose of British charm and wit to 10 venues in the Northeast this fall. London born Harmon who now resides in the indie music capital of Brooklyn, NY will hit the road fueled by the forthcoming release of her Sophomore self-titled album, due out Nov. 11.Harmon’s most obvious talent lies in her ability to tell stories with her folk-inspired songwriting that can be ironic, cheeky, vulnerable, and at times euphoric. Conscientiously crafted harmonies, a sensitivity toward the arc of a song, and drum beats that stray from the typical country ditty complement her writing. Harmon’s lyrics are delivered with an emotional directness and effortlessly flow as she splays them over delicate and nuanced guitar work and at a live show she keeps audiences entertained with personal anecdotes and stories to melt even the hardest of hearts.A 2013 International Songwriting Competition semi finalist, Harmon has caught the attention of Verbicide Magazine, New York Magazine, and Rolling Stone’s Mark Kemp, and her music has been featured in the 2006 film The Hawk is Dying, starring Paul Giamatti. Her forthcoming self-titled album features performances from Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius and Mike Savino of Tall Tall Trees and will be released in November 2014.

Darlingside delivers a truly moving blend of subtlety, power, outstanding vocal quality and contemporary songwriting. The Boston based quartet features four distinct voices clustered around a single microphone; their tightly-arranged tunes drawing from the unexpected, including strains of bluegrass, classical, and even barbershop. Accompanied by an arsenal of classical strings, guitars, mandolin, and percussion, these four close friends swap instruments from song to song and offer a sound that defies standard genre classifications.
