Forging Faith, Building Freedom: African American Faith Experiences in Delaware, 1800-1980, opening at the Delaware History Museum on September 27, 2013, will celebrate two important anniversaries. Two hundred years ago, in 1813, Peter Spencer founded the African Union Church, the first independent black denomination in the United States. The next year, he started the August Quarterly, the nation’s oldest African American festival. In addition to Peter Spencer, Forging Faith, Building Freedom will honor Absalom Jones, the first black Episcopal priest in the US; Richard Allen, founder of the AME denomination; and Samuel Cornish, founder of the first black Presbyterian church in New York City and an editor of Freedom’s Journal, the nation’s first black newspaper. As developers of independent African American religious institutions, these four remarkable Delawareans asserted their people’s right to liberty, autonomy, and equality. Their actions challenged the United States to live up to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. Through objects, documents and images, the exhibition explores the diverse faith experiences and institutions that developed from these beginnings. Historically, black faith communities have addressed many needs beyond the spiritual. They have been a key factor in education, community development and the continuing struggle for equality for people who lacked other institutions. In the absence of other avenues for leadership, the black minister assumed many roles in addition to the spiritual. Faith communities also offered opportunities for leadership and participation to lay people whose talents were not recognized in the mainstream community. The exhibition will introduce Michael Sterling of Wilmington—a modest man in the eyes of the world who lived a rich and useful life through service to Bethel AME Church. This exhibition has been developed in full collaboration with the faith community in Delaware and Delaware churches, private lenders, other public collections and Delaware Historical Society collections. It provides the first public presentation of a rich array of heritage materials. Dr. Lewis V. Baldwin of Vanderbilt University, a specialist in Peter Spencer and his churches, serves as consultant historian.Exhibition design and fabrication is by the exhibits staffof the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs.

Howard Pyle, Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth—foremost illustrators in the first half of the 20th century—created some of their best-known images for advertising calendars. Calendars hung in millions of homes, shops and offices, providing artists with an opportunity to disseminate their work to a much broader audience than that for books or magazines. A Date with Art: The Business of Illustrated Calendars introduces visitors to the once-thriving, lucrative business of illustrated calendars. From Parrish’s haunting work for General Electric’s Edison Mazda brand to Norman Rockwell’s iconic images for the Boy Scouts of America, calendar images contributed greatly to an artist’s popular reputation. Yet just as these four artists reaped financial benefit and fame by creating art for calendars, the connection to commercial ventures at times undermined their critical reputations as artists. This exhibition will reveal the various ways in which Pyle, Parrish, Rockwell and Wyeth integrated calendar work into their careers, adapting to shifting views of contemporary art, illustration and business.

The origins of the Mineralogical Museum can be traced to the donation in 1964 of the Irénée du Pont, Sr. collection. Although it has long been thought that Mr. du Pont purchased this collection primarily from Tiffany & Company, the ongoing research of Curator Sharon Fitzgerald shows otherwise. Dr. Fitzgerald’s research has uncovered new information about the origin and provenance of several specimens, as well as other remarkable highlights of this important collection, including a rare and unusually large 7.25 carat yellow Arkansas diamond, a butterfly twin calcite from the English collector and dealer John Graves and a Swiss rutilated quartz that once belonged to the English author and art critic John Ruskin.

Best known for his innovative photographs of fashion runways for Interview magazine, Scott Heiser was a talented photographer who documented a wide range of public entertainments including circuses, dance competitions, and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show. His grainy, dramatically cropped images provide unexpected glimpses of performers in action, while his sensitive portraits capture famous faces of the 1970s and ’80s. A meticulous printer, Heiser produced rich, beautifully toned photographs that inject mystery and beauty into his subjects. The Delaware Art Museum is organizing the first retrospective exhibition dedicated to Heiser (1949–1993), who was born and raised in Wilmington.

For over thirty years Somerville Manning Gallery has specialized in paintings by the Wyeth family. The American and European Masters exhibition continues to follow the artworks of N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth and the artists of their eras. Returning to a theme so successfully received, the gallery has extended the American masters collection to include some European masters such as Pablo Picasso and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who were inspirations for many Americans at the beginning of the 20th century. The show of original paintings explores over 100 years of masters in the American and European art world. Along with paintings by N.C. Wyeth, will be works by American impressionists, Maurice Prendergast, Mary Cassatt, Robert Lewis Reid, and Jane Peterson. Landscape paintings by Charles Burchfield and Georgia O’Keefe are included as well as masters Frederic Remington and John Singer Sargent, among others. A highlight of the exhibition is a major work by English artist David Hockney, one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Paintings by Helen Frankenthaler, Esteban Vicente, and the father of abstract expressionist, Hans Hofmann, will coincide with the Post-War period in which Andrew Wyeth was exploring realism. American Pop artist, Tom Wesselmann and Alexander Calder will also be featured along side sculpture by Kinetic artist George Rickey. Several great works by Jamie Wyeth and Wolf Kahn conclude the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. The exhibition includes other works from many important American schools and traditions that transition from realism to abstraction.
