Museums

The rich past of Greater Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley lends itself to the many area museums and beautiful gardens.  Learn about Delaware's storied beginnings at the Delaware History Museum. Visit Fort Delaware, a Civil War Fort, located in the middle of the Delaware River, which is said to be haunted by ghosts of Confederate prisoners.  Or, explore early American industry at Hagley Museum and Library, located along the banks of the Brandywine River, and the site of the gunpowder works founded by E. I. du Pont in 1802.

Greater Wilmington is also your gateway to Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, and Longwood Gardens.  Winterthur offers a variety of tours, exhibitions, and programs for all ages.  Discover the museum's magnificent collection of American antiques, celebrate your senses with a stroll through the glorious 60-acre garden, and enjoy shopping and fine dining.  Longwood Gardens now encompasses 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows.  You'll also find Wilmington is home to the late 18th Century inspired Nemours Mansion and Gardens, the former home of Alfred I. DuPont.  The Nemours gardens feature an 800,000 gallon pool and fountain with 157 jets capable of shooting water 12 feet into the air.

As educational as beautiful.  And remember, it's all tax-free in Delaware.
