"Dear Lou": Civil War Letters Home from Capt Charles Corbit

The Historic Odessa Foundation archives contain numerous original letters from many of the family members who lived in the Foundation’s 18th century houses. Among them are letters from Captain Charles Corbit, son of Henry C. Corbit, to his beloved wife Louisa Anderson Corbit, daughter of Daniel Corbit and Eliza Naudain of Odessa. Captain Corbit was an officer in the First Delaware Cavalry Regiment and was stationed at several locations on the eastern shore. He is recognized as a hero of the small skirmish at an important rail and road junction in Westminster, Maryland (on what is now the campus of McDaniel College) on June 29, 1863, where he led 90 men in a charge against the larger numbers of Jeb Stuart’s cavalry. It resulted in capture of most of the Delaware soldiers, including Corbit who was also wounded, but was significant for delaying Stuart’s arrival at the battle of Gettysburg.
The Corbit letters concentrate in the years 1863 to early 1865 and document many aspects of a soldier’s everyday life. Captain Corbit tells of the billeting of officers in local hotels and their horses in town stables. The letters are revealing of the harsh conditions, ailments and complaints of the men, and touching for their homesickness, and frank comments on both politicians and military leaders. During his time at the front lines in 1864 his wife, while living in St. George’s, Delaware, just 3 miles north of Odessa, informs him their only son has died. Captain Corbit’s letters are addressed "Dear Lou" his nickname for his wife Louisa and usually end with “Your Affectionate Husband Charles”.
The exhibit also includes a number of Civil War objects and an elegant period dress of the era in the HOF collection that belonged to Mary Corbit Warner. The exhibit will be in the Historic Odessa Bank building from May 7 through August 2. Save the date April 26th to meet Louisa Corbit (played by HOF librarian Rita Ryor) for an evening candlelight tour of the Corbit-Sharp House followed by wine and savories in the Collins-Sharp House.

Functional and artistic, weathervanes roosted over American buildings both humble and high style-barns and banks, churches and courthouses. Viewed today as folk art, weathervanes were one of the earliest sculptural forms in the United States. Weathervane forms run the gamut through history beginning at the Temple of the Winds in ancient Athens, where the figure of Triton-cleverly designed to always face the direction of the wind-topped the structure. In America, colonial craftsmen fashioned unique weathervanes, such as Shem Drowne's grasshopper atop Boston's Faneuil Hall, which were later imitated, mass-produced and offered through mail-order catalogues. The exhibition, which will include 28 weather-vanes, covers the variety of forms popular in this country as well as the finer points of interest to collectors including finishes, manufacturers and matters of authenticity.

Relay For Life is an overnight event that offers individuals, families, faith-based groups, schools, hospitals and businesses the opportunity to “team up” and wage the war against cancer. The festive atmosphere created at the Relay through music, food, contests, teams camping out in decorated tents and constant support is an inspiration to all who attend. The Relay begins with a Survivor’s Lap in which cancer survivors are invited to proclaim that cancer can and WILL be beaten! At dusk, in a beautiful display of lights called the Luminaria Ceremony, candles are placed around the track to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who lost their battle with it. Funds raised at Relay For Life of Wilmington are enabling the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community.

An ambivalent Cinderella, a bloodthirsty Red Riding Hood, a Prince Charming with a roving eye, and a rhyming witch are among the irreverent characters in this sophisticated and darkly funny fairytale. As a baker and his wife try to break the spell that has left them childless, they resort to dealing, swindling, conning, and lying to Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel, and even Jack (of the Beanstalk fame). It looks like a happy ending, but the Woods have a lot in store for these characters in Sondheim’s delightful and dark musical.

A small island off the coast of Maine, Monhegan has long lured artists to its remote shores, promising dramatic ocean vistas, rugged landscapes and inspiring scenes of men struggling against the forces of nature. This exhibition examines the fascination that the island of Monhegan and its people held for both Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) and Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946). Though the two artists never met, Kent's and Wyeth's paintings, when viewed together, depict a century's worth of Monhegan life and landmarks. The exhibition will include examples of some of Wyeth's most recent paintings and a number of works from his personal collection of Kent's coastal views of the Monhegan headlands. Wyeth's paintings, on the other hand, are often created with his "back to the sea," as he describes it, focusing on the people who inhabit the island. Drawn from both public and private collections, the exhibition features oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and one of Kent's sketchbooks from Monhegan.

“Enjoying authentically unique American craft has become a lifestyle choice for many casual collectors,” said Sherrie Boyer, executive director. “We all want to cheer up our space with beautiful things. It makes us happy. It makes others happy. Craft is a very accessible form of inspiration on a day-to-day basis.”
Fair hours are 10 am to 6 pm Saturday, and 10 am to 5 pm Sunday. Admission is $8. Free for children 12 and under. Free parking is plentiful.

On loan from the Birmingham Museum of Art, this unique exhibition features hand-painted portraits of individual eyes. In this late-18th-century art form, fragile watercolors were meticulously dabbed on tiny pieces of ivory ensconced in jewelry forms.
Lavishly adorned with jewels, the portraits set into brooches, rings, lockets, pendants, small boxes and toothpick cases are primarily from England and are few in number. The collection the Skiers have assembled is considered the largest of its kind, with only some 1,000 suspected to exist worldwide.

Forging Faith, Building Freedom
September 26, 2013- June 15, 2014
“Forging Faith, Building Freedom,” a special exhibition opening in the Delaware History Museum in September, will explore Delaware’s many contributions to the development of African American faith and religious institutions in the United States, part of the nation’s ongoing quest for freedom and equality for all.
The exhibition will honor four remarkable Delawareans who led in the development of independent African American churches in the early 1800s: Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, Samuel Cornish, and Peter Spencer. In Wilmington, Spencer made history when he founded the nation’s first independent black denomination in 1813 and the Big August Quarterly, the nation’s oldest African American festival, in 1814. The exhibition will also explore the diversity of African American faith experiences, the role of the black preacher, and the role of religion in the African American community.
This story is important not only for Delaware’s African Americans; it is of regional and national importance for all Delawareans and all who are interested in religions history.
