Painted Poetry: The Art of Mary Page Evans

Over the past 100 years, the Delaware Art Museum has proudly featured the work of the most accomplished artists in our region. Wilmington-based painter, Mary Page Evans, works directly from nature, seeking to capture a specific landscape, figure, tree or sky. She is engaged by particularity, making an effort to establish the locale, the time of day, and the quality of light. Not surprisingly, her influences include the French impressionists and post-impressionists, as well as the abstract expressionist, Joan Mitchell. Evans has worked at Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny and names Cézanne as an inspiration. The painter, Gene Davis, described her paintings as “hymns of unadulterated joy,” and this exhibition promises to be a gorgeous celebration of nature and the human form, as well as a retrospective covering more than 40 years of the painter’s distinguished career.

Painted Poetry: The Art of Mary Page Evans

Painted Poetry: The Art of Mary Page Evans
Through July 15, 2012...Wilmington-based painter Mary Page Evans works directly from nature, seeking to capture a specific landscape, figure, tree or sky.
Her vibrant paintings and drawings evoke particular places—gardens in Delaware and France, a mountain in the Shenandoah Valley,
the Florida coast—sites she returns to again and again, chronicling them in different moods and seasons. Displaying works made over
more than 40 years, Painted Poetry is organized thematically to highlight Evans’ longstanding interests: landscapes, gardens, figures,
trees, seas and skies. Don’t miss this gorgeous retrospective by one of the region’s most beloved painters.

Mad-Sweet Pangs

"Over the years, the Pangs sound has evolved into a wash of blues, jazz, folk, bluegrass and rock 'n' roll. The songs are English major-clever… Their concerts, in theaters and clubs from Baltimore to New York, are part come-to-Jesus celebration, part slow, sweet harmony."
– Delaware Today
Mad-Sweet Pangs draws their outrageously heady sound from too many genres to even attempt listing and too many influences to even begin naming. They're often described as genreless or, more accurately, genre-transcending. Come to a show and forget everything you know about folk, rock, blues, country, jazz, history, yourself or anything else.

Founded in 2002, Point Blank started out performing at local social functions, private parties, community and high school events, weddings and corporate functions. In 2003 the eight-piece ensemble released their debut album "Pulling Off the Covers" and quickly found themselves headlining at Philadelphia landmarks such as Zanzibar Blue and Warm Daddy's. The group began to pack venues wherever they played. Wanting to expand their musical horizons and display their tremendous talent, Point Blank soon appeared at the Berks County Jazz Festival with greats like Hiroshima, Najee and Doc Powell. 2008 found them on stage at the DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival opening for the legendary George Duke, as well as opening for jazz fusion great Jeff Lorber at The Philadelphia 'Welcome America' festival.
Later in 2008 Point Blank released another recording called "In the Raw," a cult favorite and endearing tribute to improvisational jazz. Now totally seasoned and ready to do something special for their adoring fans, Point Blank has released their first CD containing entirely original music; "A Point Of View" is an eclectic mix of grooves, rhythms and ballads that reflect a soulful brotherhood with evolving spiritual conscience.

The Steel Wheels

The Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories between blues and bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stompin' fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but whistle their own tunes, layering in rich textures and decidedly modern energy to forge a new sound.
"Imagine a blend of the passion of the Avett Brothers, the instrumentals of Old Crow Medicine Show, and then sprinkle in the backwoods feel of The Legendary Shack Shakers. In truth, attempting to compare [The Steel Wheels] to anyone is an injustice, since after one listen you can hear that they stand very well on their own perch." - John Walker, Americana Roots.

Lolly Hopwood and the Let’s Play Today Bunch inspire children to play, exercise and be healthy with their high energy, interactive shows and music! Exposed to a healthy blend of live music, storytelling, and playful activities, children (and adults too) enjoy going on lively adventures, exploring faraway places and just being downright silly! Children love to pretend to be on a romping, fun-filled train ride, pop bubbles and get clean in a giant bubble bath, drive their cars to the red light/green light song and march around like their favorite animals in the zoo. With songs inspired by classic and contemporary kids music from the 70’s and today, Lolly Hopwood and the Let’s Play Today Bunch have a country/folk vibe that’s all their own.
The pair released their debut album, Go! Go! Go!, in May 2011. They have been performing music and play concerts throughout Bucks County, PA and towns through the area in PA and NJ, including Philadelphia, at festivals, bookshops, libraries, malls and community events. The group played at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia in February and they are very excited to spread the fun, smiles, and hi-fives in Delaware!
“LOLLY HOPWOOD & the LET’S PLAY TODAY BUNCH energizes kids by engaging them in interactive song and dance. Everyone becomes a part of the performance, which draws in the crowd, with their positive message and catchy tunes with just the right mix of giggles, wiggles and smiles!”

The Teetotallers

"If someone told me about a new trio comprised of Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford, and John Doyle, I would have replied: keep dreaming. Yet that’s exactly what we have: a dream team made real." -Earle Hitchner, Irish Echo
This tour, featuring three giants of the Irish trad scene, promises to be one of the musical highlights of 2012. One of the most important Irish musicians of his generation, fiddler Martin Hayes had picked up six all-Ireland championships by the age of 19 before setting off on an musical odyssey that has brought his lyrical east Clare sound into the worlds of jazz, film, theatre and modern dance.
Virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Kevin Crawford has been a key member of two of Ireland’s most celebrated instrumental bands, Moving Cloud and Lúnasa. Awash with plaudits for his solo albums, the former Irish Echo Artist of the Year has also collaborated with the likes of Grianán, Raise the Rafters, Joe Derrane, Natalie Merchant, Susan McKeown and Sean Tyrrell.
Dubliner John Doyle’s filigree finger-picking guitar style is the perfect foil for the understated mastery of Hayes and Crawford. A founding member of Irish-American band Solas and recently bandleader for the Joan Baez band, Doyle received a Grammy nomination in 2009 for his collaboration with Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll, Double Play. And did we mention Doyle’s tenor vocals and cracking bouzouki and mandola playing? It's simply unmissable.

Blind Pilot

We Are The Tide, the sophomore album from Portland-based band Blind Pilot, follows the band's grassroots debut, 3 Rounds and a Sound, which earned them critical attention on NPR, who included them in their "Best Music of 2008" roundup, describing them as "a roots-pop duo which bathes its terrific songs in ingratiating harmonies and understated instrumentation. The result…is endlessly engaging: There's not a dud on 3 Rounds and a Sound, and a ludicrous abundance of replay-worthy ringers." The album also received praise from USA Today, the Boston Globe, the New York Post and the Philadelphia Inquirer, which called the music "…a rustic reverie." Blind Pilot began in 2007 when Israel Nebeker (vocals, guitar) and Ryan Dobrowski (drums) embarked on a West Coast bicycle tour playing to unfamiliar listeners at small-town venues. The band now exists as a 6-piece ensemble featuring fellow Oregonians Luke Ydstie (upright bass, backing vocals), Kati Claborn (banjo, dulcimer, backing vocals), Ian Krist (vibraphones) and Dave Jorgensen (keyboards, trumpet).

Sawyer Collection of Decorative Bindings—a collection of over 2,000 books—this exhibition combines the collector’s interest in the book’s cover designs with Katchadourian’s method of using the covers to explore the content of the collection as a whole. During this program, Katchadourian will discuss her process in working on this project, which is part of an ongoing series she began in 1993 entitled Sorted Books. A dessert reception will follow the program. Please call 302.351.8506 to RSVP

Once Upon a Time in Delaware/In Quest of the Perfect Book,
June 23, 2012 – September 16, 2012...
Throughout her varied art-making practice, Nina Katchadourian has explored systems, structures, codes, language and communication.
Sorted Books is an ongoing project, begun in 1993, in which the artist surveys a collection of books, selecting and grouping particular
titles so that they can be read in sequence. The clusters are photographed and the resulting images are displayed in the gallery as a
way to shed light on the unique nature of any private or public book collection. Founded in December 1911, the Museum’s Helen Farr
Sloan Library & Archives now boasts over 30,000 volumes of books, catalogues and periodicals, in addition to special collections.
Working primarily with the Library’s M. G. Sawyer Collection of Decorative Bindings—a collection of over 2,000 books acquired for
their cover design—this iteration, Once Upon a Time in Delaware/In Quest of the Perfect Book, marries the collector’s interest in the
book’s exterior with the artist’s method of using the covers to explore the content of the collection as a whole.

Echoing some of the great folk, pop and rock unions of the 60's and 70's as well as the newest super-groups and dream bands spanning the globe these days, US Rails emerges as the underdog collective of songwriters, singers and musicians who deliver a night of cool songs and great harmony. US Rails is five distinctive personalities who met originally while living in and around Philadelphia, PA but have since scattered all over the map to France, Germany and Austin, TX. Most of the members of US Rails were originally part of the Philadelphia group 4 Way Street (Sanctuary Records). Now, reinvented and rejuvenated, they are carrying on the tradition.

A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her signature warm, fat and melodic groove to everything she does. Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, she has given up trying to explain herself. After 20+ years in an industry that has called her everything from avant garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. She has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans.

Peanut Butter & Jams welcomes Lunch Money

Lunch Money brings the indie-rock experience to family audiences with an energetic salute to the stuff of childhood: roller coasters, giant cookies and getting dizzy. This trio "artfully treads the line between alt-kids and just plain alternative" [Nick Jr. Family Magazine] and this year their song "It Only Takes One Night to Make a Balloon Your Friend" topped the charts on XM/Sirius children's radio. The band delivers a high-energy show that aims to get children and their parents dancing, thinking and laughing.
Lunch Money began in 2003 when singer/guitarist Molly Ledford (The Verna Cannon - Cargo/Headhunter) decided to try her hand at bringing the live music experience to young audiences. She enlisted fellow Verna Cannon bandmate Jay Barry (drums) and multi-instrumentalist J.P. Stephens (bass, mandolin, harmonica) to form Lunch Money, the name chosen to honor that first taste of childhood independence and power. Focusing her writing, which had been described as "full of memories left in a shoebox in the dusty corners of your brain" (Spin.com), on the stuff of childhood, Molly soon accumulated a new catalog of songs about such things as wishing for a pet dog, getting up the nerve to ride a roller coaster and twirling around in rain and sun beneath an umbrella.

100 Works for 100 Years Curator Gallery Chat
Wednesday, August 8 | 11:30Am.
FREE with Museum admission.
Discover a recently promised gift of 25 copper and brass objects designed by William Arthur Smith Benson (1854 – 1924) during this
fascinating Gallery Chat with Chief Curator Margaretta Frederick. Benson, a successful inventor, designer and businessman, spent
the majority of his working life collaborating with his good friend, William Morris, producing metal design work for William Morris and
Company. Despite the seemingly contradictory use of machinery in some aspects of the production of his work, he remained firmly
within the Arts and Crafts philosophy. His unique ability to balance good design with economic efficiency enabled him to produce a
wide range of aesthetically pleasing, but affordable household goods.

The Young Dubliners blend traditional Irish music with rock n’ roll to create a jam-friendly sound. For over fifteen years the group has toured, recorded and performed before growing audiences. Their latest album, "Saints and Sinners," finds the Dubliners pushing themselves as songwriters, creating one of their finest records to date. "We really set a very high standard for ourselves as songwriters," says founding member Keith Roberts. "We live on the road, but were aware that if every few years we don't give our fans the highest quality songs we can, that level of excitement and anticipation may not last forever. We consider ourselves songwriters first and never just jammed styles together to sell albums. Our goal has always been to keep getting better and make the songs mean something."

Ben Rudnick and Friends have been bringing families, music and fun together in their own unique style since their first release, Emily Songs, in 2000 to their recent A Frog Named Sam.
Boasting a high level of adventurous musicianship, their enthusiastic recordings and live performances seamlessly range from light folk, bluegrass, calypso, rock and even Irish Jigs.
With countless kudos to their credit, including five Parents’ Choice Awards, the band considers it’s main focus to be providing a common ground where all family members can, without compromise, enjoy a shared musical experience. This is best exemplified in their live shows. Performances big and small tend to be events, a slice of time where families relax and enjoy each other’s company.
Drawing on the original songs and traditional material from their recordings, the band integrates classic songs such as "Route 66," "Oh Boy!," "Jambalaya/Hey Good Looking," "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and Beatles' tunes into their sets.
