Sports Planning

The Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau works with members and other partners to promote our area as a premier destination for sports-related events and conferences. Able to accommodate 1,600 attendees, choose from over 6,000 hotel rooms and experience a destination that offers shopping, dining and entertainment...completely, tax-free!

We are focused on bringing new sporting events to the area as well as retaining existing teams and sports venues by:

  • Assisting organizations and event owners with the recruitment and placement of sporting events
  • Helping organizations and event owners to coordinate and secure hotel rooms
  • Working with existing teams and statewide events to promote new initiatives
  • Using sports-related trade shows to promote awareness of Greater Wilmington & the Brandywine Valley area as a sporting event destination
  • Creating and distributing press materials to sports media contacts
  • Maintaining a photo library resource
  • Coordinating letters of support from governmental bodies for bid proposals

Our area has hosted the U.S. Olympic Team Handball, US Youth Soccer National Directors Cup, US Club Soccer - National Cup VI Regional and the LPGA Tournament. The area has a strong corporate base for sponsorships and is home to the University of Delaware who is well-known for winning national championships.

You may also wish to contact the Delaware Sports Commission whose mission is "to bid, recruit, and host regional and national sporting events at all levels of competition in the State for the purpose of utilizing sports facilities in the State, enhancing the economic development of the State, and promoting Delaware as a destination for amateur and professional sports.
